New data from Chain Store Guide, a firm that tracks market share for different companies, shows Wal-Mart - independent of its Sam's Club division - edged Harris Teeter to become the Charlotte region's number one grocer last year.
According to the data, Wal-Mart's share of the Charlotte region's grocery market grew from 20.7 percent in 2010 to 21.5 percent in 2011. Matthews-based Harris Teeter's market share fell slightly, from 22 percent in 2010 to 21.1 percent in 2011.
Combined with Sam's Club (5.8 percent of the market in 2011), Wal-Mart sold 27.3 percent of groceries in the Charlotte region last year.
Food Lion's share dropped, after closing down Bloom and trying to re-work its brand. In 2010, Food Lion had 19.2 of the Charlotte region's grocery market (Bloom included), but in 2011, it fell to 17.7 percent of the market.

Po' people love Wal-mart. As they say misery loves company
I wouldn't let my maid shop at Wal-Mart, that's the truth.
That is sad, HT Vic program is sooo much cheaper than Wmart. But you have to stick to VIC, but be careful HT Publix is opening soon in Indian Land and Fort Mill...
Wal-Mart is a good crossover between Food lion and Harris teeter. People who are moderately affluent are not going to find the quality of products they desire at Wal-Mart. Wont come close at FoodLion for sure. My guess is Wal-Mart is taking Food Lion customers not HT customers and their market share is simply getting larger than HT's
"Po' people love Wal-mart. As they say misery loves company"
Well apparently the midle class loves Wal-Mart as well. Maybe you didn't read the blog where it mentions the monor detail that Wal_mart has the largest market share
I am not poor by any stretch and I enjoy shopping at walmart for their low prices. Some people like to pay list price for cars some don't to each his own. But don't really care if you don't like to shop there, more room and parking spaces for me!
If you truly want to save money, shop at Aldi's. We have been shopping there for almost 2 years, and have saved a boat load. It amazes us everytime we go in, and see how much we save. The quality of food is excellent as well.
I wouldn't let my dog shop at Aldi's.
I would give WalMart a shot however, as a soon-to-be mother I'd be scared to park in my BMW at Walmart. I wouldn't want anyone thinking I'm a 1% and try and mug me or steal my car.

Agreed. The HT flyer prices are cheap. I could beat BJ's prices and not have to buy a boatload.
Walmart is Anti-America. If women's rights, the environment and putting local companies out of business is not important to you than I guess Walmart is for you.
Personally, I wouldn't be caught dead there even if they were the last place on earth.
If you want cheap processed food, less variety, and horrible customer service go to Walmart. I'll be sticking to HT, its prices may seem higher, but you just need to learn how to shop, but with couponing, HT is a breeze.
I predict once Publix enters Charlotte, Bi-Lo (and maybe Lowes Foods) will be outta here.
As long as these numbers hold true the american public will continue to be poisoned with GM foods, pesticides, herbicides and hormones just to name a few toxins.
We wonder why more and more kids are being born with DS, asbergers and other major diseases. Keep putting that crap in your body and your offspring will be effected. Fact.
Shop organic, shop local.
I can afford and prefer HT over Wal-Mart, but I have recently made the switch to the new Independence Wal-Mart in preparation for my Plaza-Central HT closing later this year for reconstruction.
I grow all my food, and slaughter all my cows and chickens!! Lot cheaper than shopping!

--> They will hold true no matter what the numbers are. The produt is the issue, not what retailer is selling it or what marketshare each retailer has.

--> What does that have to do with the article...
Shop organic, shop local.
--> People and their agendas. You can't even go to the farmer's marke and get all organic food, esp not without pesticides. herbicides. I don't know anyone who doesn't "shop local"
Most major retailers carry Organic products. i.e. Wal-Mart and Harris Teeter.
I bring in close to 100k a year and occasionally shop at Walmart. For some of those posting here who think it's just a poor man's grocery store you should know that a lot of the same boxed/canned/packaged goods you see on the shelf at Harris Teeter, BiLo, Food Lion, and yes I've even seen the same items at Earthfare, sell for much cheaper at Walmart. I don't drive a BMW or Audi. I drive a 6 yr old truck. Those who make good money and are wise don't shop at places for status.
"I would give WalMart a shot however, as a soon-to-be mother I'd be scared to park in my BMW at Walmart. I wouldn't want anyone thinking I'm a 1% and try and mug me or steal my car."
--> The Trolls are out today... Remind me How many people were car jacked at Wal-Mart last year? I recall a car-jacking at HT on the plaza.
Walmart is Anti-America. If women's rights, the environment and putting local companies out of business is not important to you than I guess Walmart is for you.
--> Hey let me make up random political issues to be mad about and then blame them on Wal-Mart exclusively. I mean other retail food stores would never use plastic or sell processed food... Women's right err. lets just make that one up.
For Walmart and women's rights..check this out:

The internet is a wonderful thing. You should use it sometime instead of just trolling around.
I am shopping yhe walmarts for vegetals and ammo. All to the place!
@For Walmart and women's rights.
--> Yeah I figured you would go there... Apparently you are confusing women's RIGHTS with allegations of workplace discrimination. And important to not those are ***allegations*** and class action suits have been barred because there is no indication that there was an organized effort by management to discriminate against women for management positions.
I'm surprised how high Costco is considering it's only one store in the entire area.
Amused the Fresh Market and EarthFare fell-off the list thanks to the Dollar General and Family Dollar.
So Hillary Clinton was against women's rights when she served on the Wal-Mart board of directors?
Publix, is NOT that great of a grocery store. That is the reason they are starting out in Indian Land and Fort Mill. Both locations are in the middle of NOWHERE, so they have NO competition.
Publix, will not do well in Charlotte, because most folks have loyalty to Harris Teeter. Wal-Mart will always be the leader in everything they do, only because they are the largest retailer in the WORLD!!! So they set the price they are willing to pay vendors for there products. Wal-Mart is King.
I am a loyal Harris Teeter customer and I have recently shopped Walmart for paper products and a few grocery items but would never consider buying any meat or produce at Walmart. Just trying to save a little money on household items so I can afford better quality meats, fruits & vegetables from My Harris Teeter!!ntnesd werega
