Harris Teeter closing Providence and Queens store June 4

The Harris Teeter Express at Providence and Queens roads will close June 4, as the company works to complete a two-story replacement store at the site.

The new, 42,000-square-foot store is set to reopen in November, Harris Teeter spokeswoman Catherine Reuhl said. Harris Teeter announced the new store project in Feb. 2011.

Building permits show Harris Teeter is spending more than $9 million on the new store. The new building will include a second-story mezzanine and more parking than the current store, which was an A&P grocery store when it was built in 1938.

It will be Matthews-based Harris Teeter's second major store replacement in Charlotte. The Harris Teeter on Central Avenue is set to reopen May 29. At that location, Harris Teeter replaced a smaller, older store with a new, larger Art Deco-style building.

The Providence Road store project also includes road improvements designed to help drivers navigate one of the city's most vexing intersections, the Queens-Queens-Providence-Providence vortex that is Charlotte's Bermuda Triangle. You can see details about the roadwork here.

I don't get how the roadwork has been an improvement. It's a nightmare for people not turning right from Providence to Providence (w/ the Harris Teeter on the right) during evening rush hour. W/ the expanded right turn lane and no left turn arrow, it can be impossible to go straight (onto Queens towards Morehead) or left. With all the oncoming rush hour traffic preventing left turns, cars trying to go left get stuck and also block the intersection for those trying to go straight.

Ohhhh my Lord. What in the ______ will all the elitist soccer moms do now? Maybe they'll drive 30 minutes out of the way just to avoid a Food Lion, Wal-Mart, and all those 'lesser' people.

I'm with you. If you are heading North on Providence it is nearly impossible to continue going straight. The have consolidated 3 lanes down to 2. There use to be 2lanes that went straight and the short 3rd lane that turned right. They have taken out the middle lane. So if you are in the left lane, then you get stuck behing somebody trying to turn left (with no left turn arrow) and you usually have to sit through another light change for that person to take a left. What a mess. No improvement at all. Not sure what the engineers were thinking on this one.

I guess I'll never understand the obsession with Harris Teeter, or any of these mega-palace grocery stores that cost almost 10 million dollars! Harris Teeter basically lies to your face every aisle you walk down. They have tons of items priced at what they are saying is a discount, tell you that you are saving several dollars. In reality, the 'discounted' price is standard retail price, and the price they put as the original is a lie. They make up that number to appear as though you are getting a deal and saving lots of money.

They should be prosecuted for misleading the public. There are already several complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau.

People who want to save money on groceries and don't give a damn about being part of some wealthy social scene, go to other grocery stores where the prices really are cheaper for the same products that Harris Teeter are putting false discounts on.

I love that shopping at Harris Teeter is considered an "elitist" activity.

Agreed that the "revised" intersection is horrible. I hope it doesn't stay that way.

I don't understand it at all. Agreeing with the response above, what are engineers thinking they surely never use that intersection. All four directions backed up, you can't even make a turn into the Harris Teeter, but let's make it even bigger and add more traffic around it. Also lets add a church crosswalk light right at that light to back up rush hour traffic even more. I can only hope they keep adding lights and additional retail to that intersection.

"Monstrosi-Teeter" ruins Providence/Queens. I miss the "Tiny Teeter" already. (and Myers Park Hardware, and the Townhouse Restaurant, and the real "Hugh McManaway and heck, maybe even the old A&P . . . sigh)

Yes, the majority of people in those stores are Myers Park elistists who act like they own everything. The are trashy and disrespectful towards the employees, with many having the racist attitude from the Gone With the Wind days.

They won't go anywhere except some lavish grocery store because nothing else is good enough for them.

There is a special place in Hell for them, I assure you.

Food Lion and Walmart beat the prices at Harris Teeter. That's a fact.

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. I see no problems with this intersection. You people have no patience at all.

That's a good one, oh man you are hilarious. I don't think the would post an artical in the paper about it being a problem if it wasn't a problem. Sorry Gandhi it is problem for people trying to get to work or home.

For all of you that say Wal Mart and Food lion are cheaper. YOU ARE WRONG. Wal mart actually isnt cheap at all. And if you are a smart shopper and follow the deals at HT you can save alot of money.

Gee, I never realized shopping at HT was an elitist activity.

My 3-year old daughter goes for the free cookies.

And I constantly see shoppers with handsful of coupons getting good bargains.

There are times I've walked out of HT with bags of groceries and only paid about 1/2 what I'd pay at Walmart.

And I'm no dummiy who's fooled by marked-up pricing.

I know how much everyone else charges for coffee, for example, and when I get a bag for less than $3, I know it's a good deal.

But I agree about that intersection.

I've made the wrong turn there a few times because I'm not that familiar with the neighborhood and only go there for the rare medical appointment in that area.

Or the nearby Thai restaurant...

Seems like a lot of the comments about the traffic flow are from people who commented without bothering to read the story. The intersection will be improved, not has been improved. What you have now is temporary.

"Gee"? .....Ok then.

Typical comment from someone who is guilty of exactly what was said above. You are an eltitst for sure and of course try and defend your expensive Harris Teeter, but that's fine.

And to the soccer mom who posted above about Harris Teeter's prices being lower than Food Lion or WalMart, well you are as crazy as they come honey.

Walmart and Food Lion have generally lower prices on random, everyday groceries, whereas Harris Teeters regular prices are marked higher, and you only really get a deal if you participate in some program, come on a certain day, or have a ton of coupons.

Most people dont' use the coupons or programs, so they are looking for lower prices without all that foolishness.

Apparently you are easily fooled. But hopefully that'w worth it to get your freek cookie, boss around employees and treat them like dirt, and feel like you been at the spa all day in a grocery store.

No thanks.

Stay on point it's about the intersection and how terrible traffic is not Wal-Mart vs Harris Teeter. Edenbridger, I'm sure all have read the artical, but don't see how it can improve with all that's being done. Let's put the biggest Harris Teeter we can at the worst intersection in all of Charlotte.

If you think shopping at Harris Teeter is elitist, you're insane. Probably 85% of the people that shop there do so because it's conveniently located. If you think it's elitist, you clearly never spent any time near the HT on Central.

The comment about how the customers treat the ht employees is true.i am an employee and have worked at the store for 2 plus years.my fellow employees have found creative ways to punish the shoppers who look down upon us.can you imagine what the store will bring at twice the capacity? We will be ready for the new shoppers when we re open. Better be nice to us....

Obama class warfare on full display! It's amazing that there are people angry about where others choose to shop. If you don't like HT, don't go there.

Anonymous said...

I wrote the first comment about the traffic, and actually I did read the linked article from last August, which describes the road "improvements" currently in place. No sign of them being temporary.

Anonymous said...

I agree, if you don't like Harris Teeter, don't go there, but why complain because others do.
Also to the one who thinks Harris Teeter's prices are misleading, have you tried reading the labels on the products all food retailers sell....talk about mis leading.

Food Lion and Wal Mart sell garbage in their fresh foods department. If you like their garbage, you should keep shopping there. The rest of us will keep shopping for produce that isn't old or spoiled.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, but you are a foul and pavilious liar. I recently went to the sorry HT on East Blvd and their produce made me feel like I was in association with a foreign nation or drug dealer. That's right.

So, before you start your nasty and horrid tirade, get the hell out of your Ballentyne bubble and know what you are talking about. You just gave yourself away. White, republican, elitist, and most likely racitst. Thank God Almighty for the employee above who swore to make sure you will not treat the employees of the new HT like trash.

May God have mercy on your lying souls.

To the fool of a soccer mom who called the rest of us 'insane', just stay the hell down in south Charlotte. It figures the racist Fox News bunch would show up and blame Obama for this.

What a sorry, hellish bunch you are. I can't wait for the next eletction. Oh, and to see you pay for the new construction of every new Harris Teeter when you pay for your groceries. God, I am glad you all live far from us, down in your cookie cutter hellhole of SC.

Can't wait for the day we tax your ____ for driving up here and using our infrastruction, only to retreat like the roaches you are.

Amazing how a simple article can bring out so much hate and negativity...this truly makes me sad!! It is hard to keep bullying out of our schools, communities and offices when there is so much hatred spread on most comment threads. Disagremeent and discussion can be healthy but the way people treat eachother online is a disgrace!!

I personally believe HT has higher prices but they also (generally) have a better selection, friendlier employees, cleaner stores, fresher produce and better prepared foods.

Personally I shop at Walmart or Super Target for standard off the shelf items and then run to the Teeter for hard to find/specialty items when necessary.

I do not think people that traditionally shop at HT are elitist, they are just willing to spend more money to have a more pleasant experience. Personally, I would rather save money on groceries and spend it in other places. I work hard for my money and do not want to spend more for the exact same item I can get elsewhere even if my shopping experience is not as pleasant.

Just my 2 cents worth...which will not buy anything
