Smashburger set for Stonecrest

Burger aficionados will soon have another option in town, with Denver-based "better burger" chain Smashburger set to open its first North Carolina location this month in the Stonecrest shopping center.

The grand opening is scheduled for Monday, June 20. Smashburger, which currently has about 100 stores, plans to open up to four more Charlotte locations in the coming years.

In addition to their burgers on toasted buns, the restaurant (which really loves the word "Smash"), also has Smashchicken sandwiches, Smashdogs, Smashsalads and Smashfries. The restaurant also plans Carolina-specific menu items, such as a Carolina burger with BBQ slaw and pimento cheese and a banana pudding milkshake.

The restaurant will join a Charlotte burger scene with plenty of local and national players. From local favorites like Penguin and Big Daddy's Burger Bar to proliferating newer chains like Five Guys Burger and Fries, there are a ton of options for your beef fix. What's your favorite?

  1. Hardee's Thickburger is still my favorite burger. Though others get more press (Five Guys, etc.), I still love my Thickburger! And their commercials can't be beat either.

  2. I prefer burgers from omy own Weber Grill. Most restuarants do not know how to cook a burger properly.

  3. I tried Smashburger in Manhattan, KS. The fried veggie sticks (asparagus, green beans & carrot sticks) were great and better than their french fries.

  4. Five Guys by a landslide!

  5. Herlocker's Park Drive-In... oops, there I go living in the past again.

  6. Five Guys rules. They do two things (burgers & fries) and do them well. Smash Burger looks like just another over priced fast food joint trying to be all things to all people. Think I'll pass.

  7. Hey shadow... you might open your mind just a bit and give it a try. What if it was going to be the BEST THING YOU EVER ATE and you never knew because you said 'probably no good. think i'll pass'. It's a big world out there... live a little! :-)
ps Peeked my head in to see what was going in there when I was at Stonecrest Qdoba. I'm excited to try SmashBurger!

  8. I'll take the burgers and atmosphere at Mr. K's, Zach's, Comet Grill and Mueller's any day of the week over these others. I don't need a whole lot of pomp and circumstance or national acclaim to get a good burger. Some of the best eats I've had in Charlotte the majority of the city knows nothing about. Just the way I like it!

  9. Hardee's and Cookout still have my business. Places like Red Robin and Five Guys really do charge way too much for what they produce. If it has to cost over $7 for an entire combo, then it had better be seriously fantastic. And those high-end prices just don't match up with the product. Love the onion rings at Cookout & Hardee's. From what I've seen of this new store, they're squarely in the RR & 5G latitudes.

  10. I'm with the post-er a couple above. Give me Zack's any day! For that matter, let South 21 or Zack's open a restaurant in Stonecrest. I live right down Elm, and I'm sick of these overpriced places. I don't need fancy things...just give me a good greasy burger and some CRINKLE cut fries!!!!

  11. Hardees? Cookout? Seriously? The only thing I want from Cookout is a shake. Last time I had a Hardees burger (very long ago) it was tasteless and full of fillers. Five guys is far superior. I will gladly pay for that premium burger and REAL fries. Ate at Big Daddy's once. It was very good. But not really better than FGs. Just more gourmet variety. I have not eaten at Smashburger but my son (in Denver) says that it is a good choice. Not one that he would go out of his way for but would def eat there given that choice and the chains. I will look forward to giving it a go.

  12. I love Burger Co on Morehead St and am a fan of their turkey burger. I never thought I'd prefer turkey over beef but they've got something going there.

  14. 5 Guys sucks. True definition of getting ripped off. Tiny little patties with a pound of fries - and the patties are FRIED :( Now Hardee's taste better because they are Angus and char-broiled, but they are frozen. At least for $2 I get something more than 2 bites.
