New Huntersville Wal-Mart moving ahead

Construction permits were issued last week for a new Wal-Mart Supercenter in Huntersville, part of a massive new development at N.C. 115 and Alexanderana Road.

The Huntersville Board of Commissioners approved the Wal-Mart, in the 400-acre Bryton development, last year. The mixed-use development is near an interchange between I-485 and I-77, and across from the large new Hendrick Luxury Auto Mall.

The permits, issued May 30, show the store will have 148,865 square feet of heated space. The construction contract cost is listed at about $14.5 million. The store will be Huntersville's first Wal-Mart. It's likely to be completed by May 2013.

  1. Thats great. Building it right at North Meck. More traffic to go with the already totally conjected area par for the course.

  2. The Town of Huntersville did their best to get this blocked. It is unfortunate that this is being built. Walmart puts small businesses out of business with their cheap Made in China crap. Will never shop walmart.

  5. How does this hurt any retailers any more than Target that's already in Huntersville? Or for that matter the two big box hardware stores, the national chain clothing stores, etc.

  6. All Walmart needs to start carrying is bath salts.

  7. The town board should be voted out for allowing this to happen.

No infrastructure improvements, and right near a high school. Awful.

  8. That location is only 8 miles from the new Super Walmart near Concord Mills. SMH!!

  9. It's a good location, being nearby a major interchange, similiar to it's location in the Steele Creek area. I am sure it will make money and be a plus to a soon growing area once I-485 is completed.

As for traffic concerns, it will not be that bad; Wal-Mart does a decent job anylising those issues before it builds a store nowadays. As for its killing small businesses, then they shouldn't try to compete against Wal-Mart to start.

  10. When 485 is complete you can call that norththern leg the Wally Loop because you're going to have a Super Walmart at just about each exit. The one off of Mount Holly Road, this new one near North Lake, the one on Thunder Road by Concord Mills and circling on around to the one off Hwy 29 near the race track. This area will become the poster child for surburban sprawl.

  11. Awesome! What a "gift" from Huntersville to allow a Wal-Mart at the very southern edge of their. I guess they are not very friendly neighbors. My guess is if they wanted to build it right in downtown Huntersville they would have found a way to stop it. How does a Wal-Mart qualify as "mixed-use." I guess the Hunterville commissioners and planners were asleep, again. 485 isn't even finished and it already will be doomed upon opening. History repeating itself. For shame, Huntersville.

  12. King Ward: you been shopping a lot in downtown Huntersville recently? I'd love to hear what you purchased that you think Wal-Mart will sell cheaper.

  13. I love the mention of the Target in Concord as though it is only 8 minutes from Huntersville. Closer to 30-45 on a weekend. I can't wait for this store to open.

  14. Why would I want to drive for 35-40 minutes to go to Concord, put up with the traffic on 77 to go to Mooresville when I can have a Walmart within 5 minutes of where I live. So glad it's coming. As for traffic problems, well the Auto complex sure hasn't made it any better.

  15. Ya'll with your negativity,I don't care about traffic,i have enough patience, and anyways TRAFFIC IS EVERYWHERE!!
So glad they are doing a walmart at hutersville, more job opportunities, woohoo!!yay!!!

And by the way walmart is better than target, they have the reasonable prices, unlike target they got expensive stuff.I wouldn't change walmart, but they can get better with clothes though.I shop at jcpenny for clothes ;)

Thank goodness it's on the other side of town from us. We will stick with Birkdale.

  17. Just what we need, more congestion around here..... Those that think Walmart is cheaper should shop the grocery sale ads each week, a little planning ahead and you'd realize Walmart is not cheaper, they just sell more "junk"....
