New York Butcher Shoppe, a high-end store at Selwyn Avenue and Colony Road, is closing this weekend.
The store carried meats, prepared foods, sandwiches and deli items such as wine and cheese.
Owner Jed Kampe said he plans to open a new restaurant in May, at an undisclosed location, that will also feature a butcher counter. He plans to serve hamburgers made from beef ground fresh on site daily.
"There will be a lot of changes mostly in the dine-in aspect, but nothing will change with regards to only using the highest quality beef, chicken, pork and lamb," said Kampe, in a statement. "I can’t thank everyone enough who have supported our current location, but in order to take this to a new level, I simply need more space with a true kitchen."
Kampe said the location will be announced soon, and he hopes to stay in the immediate area.
The New York Butcher Shoppe was founded in 1999 in South Carolina, and there are a dozen franchised locations throughout the Southeast, according to the company's website.

It closed because it was too expensive.
ReplyDeleteThey were in a bad location. I always meant to stop in, but parking and just the traffic at that intersection would make it difficult to generate the volume for any business to survive.

One Might say Jed made a mi-steak in selecting space.....
ReplyDeleteBetween Reid's, the Fish Market, and the Butcher Shoppe someone had to lose here. Reid's has a good meat selection for much less the price and even Reid's is expensive. Not sure if the Fish Market will hold on either but at least lives to fight another day. My guess is the Butcher's next stop is Ballantyne.
ReplyDeleteThere is already a really good butcher shop in Ballantyne, What's your beef, you should check them out. They've been there a couple years and always have great eats, my personal favs are their chicken sausages and dry-aged beef cuts.
ReplyDeleteAs a property owner in nearby Madison Park, we found the location hard to get into (even for Mellow Mushroom too). For all the stores for that matter.
ReplyDeleteNot for high volume traffic that's for sure. Easier to get into Reid's if you can find a place.
"Franchise butcher" kind of an oxymoron. The folks in that area figured it out. There are some things you can't/shouldn't franchise and a butcher is one of them. You're either a butcher or you're not.
ReplyDeleteWent there one time and walked right out. If I wanted to pay $40 for a steak I will go to Sullivans and let them cook it for me.
ReplyDeleteTheir meat was excellent. Better than Reids and was worth the cost. Charlotte needs a place to buy good cuts of meat, including Prime. Sorry to see them go.
