Local blog Charlotte Restaurant Traffic is reporting that a Jersey Mike's Subs will take over the former Blockbuster store on East Boulevard, which is closing this month.
Blockbuster's last day of business is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 19. The store has been holding a going-out-of business sale for more than a month. The East Blvd. location is just one of the hundreds of Blockbuster stores to get the ax since the chain declared bankruptcy and was bought by Dish Network for $320 million.
The Jersey Mike's location will be the restaurant's 19th location in the Charlotte region. No date for the opening has been given. According to Restaurant Traffic, Jersey Mike's will be using half of the old Blockbuster's space. No word yet on what could fill the other half.

The former Blockbuster at the Harris Teeter Shopping Center in Steele Creek (NC 49/NC 160 intersection) is now a Nothin' But Noodles restaurant, an improvement.

ReplyDeleteSeriously?!?! Why does Charlotte need ANOTHER chain sub restaurant. This would have been a great location for a LOCAL business. I always have such high hopes for Charlotte and the direction it is heading and then it stays on the same track of crappy chains, processed foods, and overweight residents. When will this town (yes, town – as Charlotte is definitely not a city) get better taste in everything.

ReplyDeleteJersey Mike's is a good edition but I'd rather see a "no-chain" policy adopted for Dilworth and some of the more historic communities in Charlotte.

ReplyDelete1. The Blockbuster in Ballantyne will house the Wolf Camera and the cleaners since HT is expanding to a flagship store like Morrocroft.
ReplyDelete2. Rumor has it that the other half of Blockbuster on east will be TCBY. Only rumor so far.
3. The city/communities can't dictate what restaurants open and where. It's up to the Landlord and the retailer and who is going to pay the rent. City only dictates the zoning that allows certain uses on the land. I do agree that the Landlord should have consider other options besides Jersey Mike's, but that's his discretion.

Actually, as far as the city dictating policy...yes it can. Asheville does. There is only one chain that I know of in downtown Asheville - a Mellow Mushroom if it is still there.
ReplyDeletea no chain policy... yeah... adopted by dilworth. good luck with that. there are no deed restrictions and there never will be. what does having a chain as a business even have to do with a historic district. there have been chainns there as long as I have been alive

A Jersey Mike's was already in the plaza behing Brizz years ago and failed. Whats going to be so different now?

ReplyDeleteThere is an empty box and someone wants to put their business in it. Who cares what you think. if you don't have the cash to put something nicer in there. Too bad. No matter how you look at it Jersey Mikes is better than an empty box. Regardless anyone who has a problem witha sub shop because it is a chain is ridiculous. there are chains everywhere including Dilworth. What a ridiculous nitpicking complaint. A chain store is replacing another chain store in Dilworth...wah, wah, wah. To those who hat chainstore in Dilworth, why don't you draft a business plan for a local store/eatery, drum up the capital to make it happen, negotiate a spece somewhere in Dilworth, an make a go of it instead of complaining that no one else does? In the meantime, I'm sure some Dliworth residents and workers will be snjoying some frresh subs.

Examples like Mellow Mushroom (still there), Subway, Starbucks, Bojangles, Fudruckers, and Jimmy John's (source: Google Maps). Granted not many compared to the number of local restaurants; the point is I doubt there is any law forbiding chain stores in the downtown area, its just less typical to find them in the downtown area (look at any downtown in North Carolina, you will simply not find many chain stores).
