Carolina Ale House opens uptown

Beer drinkers uptown, rejoice: There's another spot to imbibe uptown, with the opening of Carolina Ale House.

The Raleigh-based chain's first Charlotte restaurant is now open, bringing its total number of restaurants to 16.

Located at 201 S. College Street, the new restaurant's menu includes food such as dry-rubbed chicken wings and burgers topped with chili and coleslaw, along with a pretty solid beer list.

Have you tried this place yet? Any thoughts?

  1. I really liked the one in Wilmington. It's great to have more reasonably priced places with a sports bar theme in Charlotte. I hope they hire better wait staff than Taco Mac. That place is aweful.

I also wish the location wasn't in the middle of uptown. I don't work up there and I am not going to go and pay for parking just to go eat.

Other than that I am glad they are in Charlotte.

  2. Wow, this menu is SUPER expensive...

  3. I agree that it would be nice if they weren't in uptown. Too close to the trashy Epicenter. What I'd really like is a place that sells draft beer that's not so expensive! What gives with $5 for a beer. Wow.

  4. You know, this is the second attempt for the Carolina Ale House in Charlotte. The first opened in the University area (approximately 2004)and was closed within 2 years.

  5. Yeah, they must have better help than Taco Mac to survive. Taco Mac has so much potential. I hate going there. Glad to have another spot to drink craft beers though. We'll give it a shot. Heard they had 52 TV's also, and some nice looking servers, at least...

  6. I just can't figure out people who will go out to drink craft beer for such ridiculous prices. Go to Total Wine, HT, Lowe's, or better yet Brawley's -- buy great beer for 1/2 to 1/3 bar price, and save yourself the tip and the horrible service.

  7. Awesome! Good prices too...you rarely see beers like that under $5. I hope the food is good, but I'm glad there is finally a place to get good beer uptown!

  8. Anon @ 3:08 PM, did you look at the menu linked to the post? Their prices are fantastic for a pint of good stuff, and they've got pitchers to boot! This will be a great after-work rendezvous spot for folks working uptown.

  9. I've been to several of their places in Raleigh and Wilmington. One of the daily specials and a couple of nice beers is about $20, not bad.

  10. Anon 2:47..."super expensive" compared to what? McDonalds? of course, if you use th term "super expensive" you're probably a 15 year old girl anyway.

Anon 3:08...really? You mean its cheaper to stay home and drink than going out? I had no idea, thanks so much for that hot tip!

  11. Got curious and went there for lunch today. Much better food than your typical sports bar and tons of TVs! Yes - not super convienient if you're not already uptown, but they said they validate parking after 5p. Best part? Today all pints were $3, with the exception of a few high gravity brews. Overall, an AWESOME addition to Uptown.

  12. This is definately not the place that was open in the Univerity area in 2004. There are lots of "ale house" types of places out there and I know for sure this is their first location west of Raleigh. I worked at their orginal location in Raleigh and have followed their success since.

  13. To add another comment about Anon @ 3:08, the fact that you think Brawley's is cheap makes me think your last name is Brawley. That place is expensive as hell and a dump.

  14. Only problem I see on the menu is that they still list the 'Carolina' beers as coming out of Mooresville. Sadly, not the case anymore.

  15. I've been to the one in Greenville, SC, and looked this beer list. The list is long, but it disappoints me as to how many mass produced/average beers are on the list. No Bells (ok, 1), no Founders, No Great Lakes, no Pisgah, no Ommegang - a few nice local breweries, which is nice. But lots of room for improvement from an "AleHouse"

  16. Anon @ 3:08 That's why you're a single loser.

  17. 52 TV's? That's at least 51 too many.

  18. Anon @ 4:18 - I just looked at pictures of the place on their website and they may be a Raleigh based company but they must have franchises because I used to go to the "Palm Harbor Ale House" in Florida all the time many years ago and the interior looks pretty much the same. The reason why the one in University did not work was because they were trying to cater to the "church crowd" (no disrespect to them) and it's a SPORTS BAR. People get loud and rowdy. Plus, the clientele in that area was not very good. I just wish they would open one out here in Gaston County since Gators closed because now I cannot find good wings any where!

  19. 201 S. College Street is the address. So it is in the Charlotte Plaza Building? That's an odd place for them....

  21. What?!? no, Foothills brewery beers. that's an outrage. and no i don't work for Foothills.

  22. It's a fine place to eat, especially when you want to watch the ball game. The meals under $10 are par for the course. The higher end meals are about $2 too pricey. The kids meals are a good deal...if I can talk the neighbor kids into going to the restaurant with me on a Football Sunday....$3.99 meals for everyone!!!

The Beer Prices...well, they're the Beer Prices and there are no deals.

It's a "Cheers" hangout...or so the Owners are hoping.

  23. Terrible food. Everything tasted frozen. Mozz cheese tasted like cardboard and marinara had ice in it. I watched a bar manager stand on the bar with his filthy shoes to stock the cabinets above the bar. A lot of liquor was out of stock.
