A new Earth Fare, the Asheville-based organic supermarket, is ready to open on Wednesday in Huntersville, the company said Monday.
And a new Kohl's is coming to Waxhaw this September. Although an opening date hasn't been set, the company said Monday that it will hire 150 people to staff the store soon.
Earth Fare currently has 21 stores in six states, including two in Charlotte (one in Ballantyne, one in SouthPark). The company says it doesn't sell any products with high fructose corn syrup, trans fats, artificial colors and synthetic growth hormones or antibiotics.
Earth Fare's Huntersville location is at 10421 Boren Street, near I-77 and Gilead Road. The store will open at 8 a.m. on August 3, Earth Fare said. It will feature organic and local foods, meat, poultry cheese and seafood departments, a bakery and a supplement section.
In Waxhaw, the new Kohl's is coming in September. The store is looking to hire about 150 retail workers, Kohl's said, including "associates for register operators, department associates, customer service, early a.m. freight unloaders and evening ad set associates."
A jobs fair is set for August 7 - 11, Sunday through Thursday next week, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Pineville. In a press release, Kohl's said applicants should visit www.kohlscareers.com or call 877-639-5645 to schedule their interview.
I live right near where the new Earth Fare is going and am intrigued to at least check it out. I've never been to one before.
ReplyDeleteI live in Asheville and shop at Ingles. Earth Fare is really expensive. Besides, all of the ingredients Earth Fare doesn't sell are what make food taste better :-)
ReplyDeleteKohls is not going into Waxhaw, it's being built on Rea Road, closer to Blakeny.
ReplyDeleteYeh... you're gonna pay more for that tasteless healthy food. But I guess that's cheaper than a bypass operation.
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize Earth Fare was Asheville based - another reason to support a "local" business. Earth Fare is a great market. Prices are comparable to Healthy Home Market and Trader Joe's organics. Give it a try.
ReplyDeleteDoes Earth Fare sell balloons?
ReplyDeleteplain and simple. asheville-based dirty hippy over-priced 'market'.
ReplyDeleteEarth Fare is not an organic market. They sell thousands of non-organic food items. They are, however, a natural foods store.
ReplyDeleteAsheville wasn't a 'dirty hippy over-priced' anything when I grew up there......; it was quite the opposite.....very pleasant. Now even those originally from Asheville are priced out of living there...! It's become way too commerical and the tourists that came in the 70's stayed.........so it is almost a transplanted place now. They took it too far.....and the true Asheville is hard to find.
ReplyDeleteKohls will be in unincorporated Waxhaw.
ReplyDeleteAgreed Anon 1:27. I grew up in Charlotte and I think I'm the only Charlotte native left! Everything (and everybody) I grew up with here are now gone. I feel like an outsider in my own hometown. Today's Charlotte is nothing like the Charlotte I grew up in, and I miss it.
ReplyDeleteAs someone who grew up in New Jersey, lived most of my adult life in Philly and then moved to Charlotte a few years ago, I apologize! You have to understand that most of the cities up north are totally saturated, too expensive, prone to cold weather and have very high unemployment. Thank you for taking us! I hope we don't screw up Charlotte too badly. I love this city.
ReplyDeleteI had never shopped at Earth Fare until I moved from Charlotte to Auburn, AL about a year ago. We have one here, and my fiancee and I love it. It's a little too expensive to buy EVERYTHING you need there, but it's very good and reasonable for produce, coffee, and meats. Also, if you sign up for their email list, they send out really good weekly coupons for discounts on beef, seafood, etc. If you've never shopped there, do yourself a favor and at least check it out.
ReplyDeleteEarth Fare is nice but the southpark store is too cluttered and too difficult to move around it. The other stores are too far from me so I opt for Healthy Home Market which is based in Charlotte.
ReplyDeleteActually the Kohls is in the unincorporated section of Weddington according to the map. Waxhaw's unincorporated boundary ends just slightly past the Rea and 16 intersection.
ReplyDeleteI really like the SouthPark store. I like the idea of being able to buy meat that was humanely raised and not full of chemicals. I like that they don't even sell veal, that their carbon footprint is smaller, coming from Asheville instead of California.
ReplyDeleteSome things are more expensive, but some things I buy regularly are actually cheaper than chain supermarkets. Their EarthFare brand of items has never disappointed me.
Like Alex, I am delighted with their e-mails and coupon goodies.
They have a good selection of wines, also reasonably priced. Their restaurant specials are quite popular here. We're NC natives, but have been transferred from Minneapolis to Memphis through the years. This may be my favorite store.
They call it Waxhaw because everything that doesn't have its own postal address on that side of the county (Weddington, Marvin) has a Waxhaw Address.
ReplyDeleteEarthFare is great for prepared foods. If you want to bring home something for dinner, the options are great. The bakery and produce and nice too, but you'll pay.
ReplyDeleteWhat does the fact that you are a native of Charlotte or Asheville have to do with the subject of this story?
ReplyDeleteAs far as Earth Fare, there are more ways to compete than on price alone. Enjoy something different rather than another "shop here, we have the lowest prices" store (yeah lowest prices, least variety, nastiest stores, you get the picture).
You can`t please everyone.... as the comments below prove. I will say...if you take the time to look for what you like you will find better products and they aren`t always expensive, Sure..they are more just like the Fresh Market in Cornelius or at a Trader Joe`s. So what ?... it`s a niche store for good healthy foods. You don`t want that ... fine... go across the street to Bi-lo....it`s a free country.
ReplyDeleteEarth Fare = GROSSLY overpriced. A can of San Marzano Brand Tomatoes is $5.19 there, same can at Fresh Market is $3.15.
ReplyDeleteThe Kohl's store is actually in Marvin, at Rea and Tom Short Roads, originally where they had planned a much-opposed Walmart.
ReplyDeleteThere is also an Earth Fare on Cherry Road in Rock Hill near Winthrop University. It is in a former small HT store. I do find that their prices on certain items at Earth Fare are actually lower than Harris Teeter, for example, many of specialty cheeses, certain organic cereal brands, and Highland beer.
