Craft beer tasting at Cotswold Harris Teeter

If you're looking for a different happy hour setting this Friday, check out a craft beer sampling and sale event at the Harris Teeter in Cotswold.

The store, at South Sharon Amity and Randolph roads, is hosting a dozen breweries on March 11, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Customers (over 21, of course) will be able to sample beers from these craft breweries: Great Lakes, Oscar Blues, Harpoon, Lone Rider, Magic Hat, Highland, Abita, Saranac, Flying Dog, Smutty Nose, Crooked and Sierra Nevada.

Beer samplings at grocery stores in North Carolina have been legal for less than two years, after a new state law went into effect in late 2009. Servings are limited to two-ounce sample cups. In-store wine tastings have been legal since 2001.

Also starting Friday is the city's second annual Craft Beer Week, organized by local brew enthusiasts. Check out a calendar of events, which include samplings and contests, here.

What beers are you looking forward to trying, and what do you think of Charlotte's beer scene?

  1. Really excited about Craft Beer Week. The Terrapin takeover interests me the most, as I consider them to be one of the better brewers around. Charlotte has made some strides since I moved here in 2007. The opening of the Old Meck and Four Friends brewery has made a big difference as well as places like Duckworth's. We'll never be Asheville in terms of local beer culture but I think we're headed in the right direction. Hope to see more breweries open in the future and hopefully one (maybe one of the existing breweries) will open an urban brewpub - Uptown or one of the surrounding walkable neighborhoods.

  2. Kudos to Harris-Teeter Cotswold! Now, if you really want to learn about beer and how to brew your own check out the Carolina BrewMasters (Google it) sponsors of Charlotte Oktoberfest.

  4. Make mine a Smutty!

As Joe said, Terrapin has several great brews, especially the Hopsecutioner IPA!

Its time for NC to allow growlers to be sold in grocery stores.

  6. Growlers can be sold at grocery stores, they just have to be filled at the brewery...in-store growler fills are allowed in SC.

  7. Hey Joe!

Charlotte had 4 brewpubs back in the late 90's.

    Dilworth
    Atlantic beer and ice
    Southend Brewery
A small place on Woodlawn by I-77 that was a bakery and small brewery.

So actually Charlotte has become worse. I know at least 3 of them were open at the same time.

And what is up with the lack on NC and even SC beers on this list in favor of Saranac?

Not to mention Carolina Brewery in Mooresville is moving to Winston.

  8. Be sure to stop by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police booth just outside afterwards to get a free ticket for the uptown jail tour.

  9. Jennifer - Check out Earth Fare in Ballantyne or near South Park mall. They've got growlers from Green Man in Asheville. Try the ESB!
